Cars take us where we want to go. We value our cars, and we take great lengths to secure them, like locking doors, protecting the paint with a coat of wax, housing them in garages, alarms, and a whole lot more. Data management platforms like Hitachi Solutions Empower Data Platform are the vehicles enterprises use to centralize and transport their valuable data.
But just like our cars, you need to ensure that your data vehicles are also secure. Similar to a lock and key, data access controls provide you ability to define which users have access to what data, as well as what they can do with that data. Access controls are crucial to the successful operation of businesses in all sectors.
Hitachi Solutions Empower Data Platform is now releasing Role-based Access Controls (RBAC), a set of features that allow you to granularly define access to data movement orchestration within your deployment. RBAC lets you dictate which users have the ability to view and modify the flow of data from sources to the lakehouse. See the demo below for a sneak-preview:
What is Role-based Access?
RBAC provides four distinct classes of users, in descending order of permission-enablement: admin, writer, excecutor, and reader.
Administrators are the only role that can add new users to your Empower deployment, as well as edit roles and remove team members.
Granular Definitions for Data Access
With the release of RBAC in Empower you can define roles for your entire Enterprise, an Organization within your Enterprise, or even a specific Environment within any Organization. With Empower, you grant trickle-down access. For example, if you defined a user to be a “reader” at an Organization-level, they will also be a “reader” at all Environments within that Organization.
Empowering Data Access Controls
Empower is integrated with your Azure Active Directory/Microsoft Entra ID, making it easy to find and add users from your Azure account to the Empower platform with a simple search. You can filter users within RBAC, as well as search for specific people at all levels, as we show in the demo above.
By simplifying access control management, RBAC enables Empower users to better harness the power of their data, drive innovation, and achieve their business goals securely. For more information on access controls, please visit our public documentation on access controls.
Benefits of Better Access Control
Effective data access control is not just about protecting data. It’s about unlocking the true value of data, empowering enterprises to operate more efficiently, innovate faster, and deliver better services to their customers. Here are a few reasons why RBAC is so imporant for your company’s success:
Enhanced Data Security
One of the primary values of effective data access control is data security. By implementing strict access controls, enterprises can significantly reduce the risk of data breaches and unauthorized access. This not only helps prevent financial loss but also safeguards the reputation of the organization.
Regulatory Compliance
In many industries, regulations around data protection and privacy are becoming increasingly stringent. Effective access controls can help enterprises meet these regulatory requirements, ensuring they avoid penalties and maintain their standing with customers and partners.
Improved Operational Efficiency
Data access control isn’t just about limiting access. It’s also about ensuring the right people have the access they need to perform their roles effectively. By managing user permissions efficiently, enterprises can streamline operations and boost productivity.
Accountability and Transparency
With robust access controls in place, all data access and activity can be logged and monitored. This promotes accountability among users and allows for effective audit trails, providing transparency and visibility into data usage within the organization.
Powering Data Access Control with User-Friendly Solutions
While the importance of data access control is clear, managing it can be complex and challenging. This is where user-friendly data management platforms can make a significant difference.
